There is no Children category on iTunes, but there are so many other categories that allow you to download applications for children. Many of them are included in categories, such as Books, Education, Games (even games can be educational), Music, Photo & Video, Social Networking, Sports and many others. Obviously, the one that is most appropriate for a child is Education. And if free applications is what you seek for, I have made a short list with free educational apps downloadable to iPhones.

1. Pilot Fish Media has designed this Kid Apps: 13 in 1 application, that is according to its developer the perfect application to teach your children fundamental reading, writing and math skills. So stop searching for applications that allow you to teach your child these, since this app contains them all. No wonder it is named “13 in 1″. It contains different tasks ranging from math games, interactive tracing drills, more than 800 flashcards, the possibility of learning to count with pictures and sound, of learning 550 words and more. This free application requires iOS 3.0 or later.

2. An easy method of finding only free apps when you're searching for applications on the App Store is to look for apps that contain “free” or “lite” terms in their names. You may find this next application: Baby Piano Lite, developed by Dream Cortex. This is a top seller in the App Store’s Education category. No wonder it is, because it allows your child to stay amused while learning in fact how to explore the piano music. The app includes a colorful 7-key piano with animated animal characters and gives your children the possibility of learning 3 songs. More songs will be added soon. Kids can record their performance and replay. Baby Piano is suitable for kids between 9-36 months.

3. The American Museum of Natural History is present on the iTunes too with an application. The name of the application they offer for free to those that have Apple mobile devices is Dinosaurs: The American Museum of Natural History Collections. If your child is not yet a fan of these extinct animals, don't worry, there is plenty of time for him to become one. And if you will download this application for him, you can be sure that the next visit to a museum will be directly to this AMNH. Your children can learn about dinosaurs, the science and personalities behind the Museum’s fossil collection, explore the history of these animals, go further into the Museum’s archives and visit the Museum from home. The application even contains a mosaic of more than 1000 archived images.
